KANO TAN'YU

TIGER, EDO PERIOD (1615–1868)

About the Artwork

Dragon and Tiger, Edo Period (1615–1868). Kano Tan'yu. One of a pair of six-fold screens: ink on paper. Purchase: William Rockhill Nelson Trust.
Samurai were members of the powerful Japanese warrior class from the 1100s until their decline in the 1800s. This respected class studied Confucian ethics, supported religious institutions, and commissioned grand works of art. Paintings like Dragon and Tiger from the eminent Kanō school, on display here, exhibit the samurai’s status and authority.
