Hanging with Lantern Design, Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), 15th–16th century. Unknown artist (Chinese). Silk and metallic thread brocade. Purchase: acquired through the bequest of Mrs. Jacob L. Loose from Charlotte Horstmann, Ltd.
This brightly colored hanging consists of two panels sewn together. The panels may have belonged to a larger set of wall decorations or furniture covers. The elaborate lanterns at the center of each panel — along with flowers, corals, jewels, and clouds — signify wealth and happiness. This type of wall hanging (depicted in the upper right of the image below) decorated upper-class homes during the Lantern Festival. Many Asian people still honor the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day after Lunar New Year by displaying elaborate luminaries in public spaces.
