Prendergast painted this watercolor during a six-month stay in Venice. In Side Canal, Venice, he expertly reserved, or left blank, the white of his watercolor paper to suggest the bridge railing and figures in the boats. Prendergast’s technique serves his subject when picturing the canal water. He introduced washes into other, still-wet washes, allowing the colors to run and blend. He also dripped clear water into the wet wash. The impact of these drops created the light areas with feathered bands in the lower left corner.
